Best Travel Backpacks

A good travel backpack replaces a suitcase for short trips and doubles as a day bag on longer ones. The right choice depends mostly on size (litres), how it opens, and whether it fits airline cabin rules.

What to look for

Capacity that matches the trip
20–30 L works as a day bag or for 1–3 nights. 35–45 L covers a week of carry-on-only travel. Above 45 L usually needs to be checked in.
Clamshell or panel opening
A zip that opens like a suitcase makes packing cubes easy to use. Top-loaders are lighter but harder to live out of.
Empty weight
