Manali packing list for summer, monsoon and winter

Manali packing list by season: layers for cool summer nights, rain gear for the monsoon and full winter clothing for snow — plus Rohtang and road trip tips.

By TravelGearly Editorial TeamUpdated

Quick answer

Pack for Manali in layers. In summer (April–June) bring T-shirts, a fleece and a light jacket for cool nights and high passes. In the monsoon (July–August) add a rain jacket and waterproof shoes. In winter (December–February) you need thermals, a down jacket, woollen cap, gloves, woollen socks and waterproof boots.

Manali sits at around 2,000 m in Himachal Pradesh, and its weather shifts a lot through the year — and through the day. The rule for any Manali packing list is layers: you’ll want a T-shirt at noon and a jacket after sunset.

Summer (March–June)

  • T-shirts and a couple of full-sleeve tops
  • Jeans or trek pants
  • Fleece or sweater
  • Light jacket (windproof is ideal for Rohtang and Solang)
  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Sunscreen, sunglasses and a cap — the mountain sun is strong

Monsoon (July–August)

Everything above, plus:

  • Rain jacket or poncho
  • Waterproof shoes or sandals with grip
  • Quick-dry clothes
  • Waterproof cover for your backpack
  • A buffer day in your plan — roads can close after heavy rain

Winter (December–February)

  • Thermal innerwear, top and bottom
  • Fleece or wool mid-layers
  • Down or padded jacket
  • Woollen cap, gloves and woollen socks
  • Waterproof boots with good grip
  • Heavy moisturiser and lip balm — cold air is very dry
  • Compression packing cubes to fit bulky layers

For everyone

  • Photo ID
  • Power bank — power cuts happen in winter. See power banks
  • Motion-sickness tablets for the winding roads
  • Refillable water bottle
  • Some cash for smaller valleys

Rohtang Pass and road trips

Vehicles going to Rohtang Pass need a permit issued online; check the current process and closure dates before you plan. On road trips, carry snacks, water, a car charger and warm layers inside the car, not in the boot.

Frequently asked questions

What should I wear in Manali in December?

Thermal innerwear, a fleece or sweater, a down or padded jacket, woollen cap, gloves, woollen socks and waterproof boots with good grip. Temperatures often fall below freezing at night.

Is a jacket needed in Manali in May?

Yes. May days in Manali are pleasant, but nights are cool and places like Solang Valley and higher passes are much colder. A fleece plus a light jacket is enough for most travellers.

Snow suits and boots are commonly available to rent near Solang Valley and other snow points. It's still worth carrying your own gloves, socks and thermals for comfort and hygiene.
