Train travel essentials for Indian Railways journeys

Train travel essentials for overnight and long-distance Indian Railways journeys: what to carry for sleeper, 3AC and 2AC, security, food, hygiene and comfort.

By TravelGearly Editorial TeamUpdated

Quick answer

For Indian train journeys, carry your ID and ticket, a chain lock to secure bags under the berth, a light sheet or shawl (AC coaches get cold), a power bank, water and snacks, sanitiser and tissues, slippers, a small torch and earplugs. Keep valuables in a small bag you sleep with.

India’s trains are one of the best ways to see the country — and on an overnight journey, a few small items make the difference between a good night and a long one. These train travel essentials are for reserved journeys on Indian Railways.

Coach-specific tips

Sleeper class: no bedding is provided, and windows open — carry a sheet, a shawl for early mornings, and a mask for dust.

3AC and 2AC: bedding is provided, but AC coaches can be cold at night. A light layer helps.

Upper vs lower berth: lower berths are easiest for families and older travellers, but you’ll share the seat during the day. Upper berths are more private and stay made up.

Security

Most trains have a ring under the lower berths. A steel chain lock lets you secure your bags to it, so you can sleep without worrying. Keep phone, wallet and ID in a small pouch you sleep with — a travel organizer works well.

Power

Charging points are shared between several berths and some don’t work. A power bank keeps your phone alive for tickets, maps and UPI payments.

With kids or a baby

Book lower berths where possible, bring extra snacks, wipes, a change of clothes and small games. For infants, see baby travel essentials.

Pack light

Space under berths is limited. A soft bag or travel backpack fits better than a large hard suitcase. See how to pack light.

Frequently asked questions

What ID is needed for train travel in India?

Carry an original government photo ID such as Aadhaar, a driving licence, voter ID, PAN card or passport. Ticket checkers may ask for it, especially for e-tickets and reserved berths.

Is bedding provided on Indian trains?

Bedding — sheets, a pillow and a blanket — is usually provided in AC classes (1AC, 2AC, 3AC). It is not provided in sleeper class, so carry a sheet or light blanket there.

How do I keep luggage safe on an overnight train?

Lock bags to the ring under the lower berth with a chain lock, keep valuables in a small bag you sleep with, and don't leave phones charging unattended at the charging point.
